Barn Burning

The story was longer then I anticipated but in the end appealed to me. I like how Faulkner described the characters. I had a true definite image in my mind of each of them. For the father I kind of had the idea that he could have come off kind of ignorant because of his lack of speaking. Or maybe he was indeed a wise man of few words. Sartoris came off to me as a loving boy towards his father. Yet there was always something burning inside him to tell the truth because he knew that was right. He was caught between a rock and a hard place. He didnt want to betray his father, but knew his father was doing wrong. You can tell when reading the story that sartoris looked up to his father and obeyed him. He was always torn between being loyal to his family or being honest about what is right and wrong to the victims of his fathers strange barn burning habits. The twin sisters were always just kind of there. They came off to me as lazy and possibly dumb. The mother seemed sweet and hardworking, but always having to deal with the after effect of her husbands crazy actions. She seemed to be more mentally strong then the rest. I don't really know what to say about the aunt. I could not figure her out. She just seemed to be in the picture kind of always puzzled and ignored by everyone.
Even though Sartoris's father and older brother did wrong the whole family seemed to just strangely just look past it. Maybe out of fear of the father or just knowing that he was the boss and they would be disrespecting him if they did othewise. Over all I enjoyed the story because it really made me wonder about some people. I mean why did the father go around burning his employers barns? He could have done it because there was something just not right with him in the head, or maybe he did it trying to prove a point to the aristocrats that they were no better then he was. It really left me thinking.
In the end I think we all know what happens to the father and possibly brother. It ends sadly because the boy is always now going to be left with the guilty feeling of being unloyal to his father. And every boy at that age just wants to earn there fathers respect and he did the complete opposite. This story has been the best one I have read for the class yet. THe reason being is because it actually had a point unlike the rest. And some of us can relate to it. I know there have been times when I have known someone who has done wrong but kept my mouth shut because I thought it was better to be a good friend then blab my mouth and get them in trouble. So which one is right, telling the truth or being loyal to those you care about?
